[Chapter: The Sixth Proof—“In Houses Which Allah Has Ordered to Be Raised and His Name Mentioned Therein”—and the Response to It]
The Rāfidī (1) said:
“The sixth proof concerns (2) the words of Allah Most High:
‘In houses which Allah has ordered to be raised and His name mentioned therein, He is glorified therein morning and evening by men,’
down to His words:
‘They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned.’
[Surat al-Nūr: 36–37] (3)
Al-Tha'labī related with his chain of transmission from Anas (4) and Burayda, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—recited this verse. A man stood and asked, “Which houses are these, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “The houses of the prophets.” Abu Bakr then stood before him and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is this house among them?”—meaning the house of Ali and Fatima (5). He replied, “Yes, it is among the finest of them.”’ (6)
The men are described therein in terms that indicate their superior merit. It therefore follows that Ali (7) is the Imam; otherwise, this would entail placing the less meritorious ahead of the more meritorious (8).”
The response may be given from several angles:
