Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Allah Most High has also said:

“If you two support one another against him, then surely Allah is his Protector—as are Gabriel and the righteous believers.”

[Surah al-Tahrīm: 4]

It is also reported in the Sahīh collections that he said:

“I wish I could see my brothers.”

They asked, “Are we not your brothers?”

He replied, “Rather, you are my Companions. My brothers (1) are people who will come (2) after me, believe in me, and yet have never seen me.” (3)

(1) S and B: “Rather, you are my brothers and my Companions…” This is erroneous. (2) N: “other people who will come.” (3) The hadith is narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sahīh Muslim, 1/218 (Book of Purification, chapter: The Recommendation to Extend the Radiance of the Face and Limbs in Ablution). Its wording is: Abū Hurayra narrated that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—went to the cemetery and said, “Peace be upon you, O abode of believing people. If Allah wills, we shall join you. I wish that we had seen our brothers.” They asked, “Are we not your brothers, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “You are my Companions; our brothers are those who have not yet come.” They asked, “How will you recognize those of your community who have not yet come, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Tell me: if a man owned horses with white blazes and white legs among solid black horses, would he not recognize his own horses?” They replied, “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “They will come with radiant faces and limbs from ablution, and I shall precede them to the Pool. Yet some will assuredly be driven away from my Pool just as a stray camel is driven away. I shall call to them, ‘Come here!’ But it will be said, ‘They made changes after you.’ I shall then say, ‘Away with them! Away with them!’” The hadith is also found in Sunan al-Nasā’ī, 1/79 (Book of Purification, chapter: The Adornment of Ablution); Sunan Ibn Mājah, 2/1439–1440 (Book of Asceticism, chapter: Mention of the Pool); al-Muwatta, 1/28–29 (Book of Purification, chapter: General Matters Concerning Ablution); and al-Musnad (al-Maārif ed.), 15/152 and 18/56–57. It also appears in Sahīh al-Jāmi al-Saghīr, 6/107. Al-Suyūtī stated that the hadith is found in Musnad Ahmad, narrated from Anas—may Allah be pleased with him.
