Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

al-Thalabī, it says:

Its meaning is: ‘Convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord concerning the excellence of Ali.’ When this verse was revealed, ‘the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—took Ali by the hand and said, “Whoever has me as his mawlā (patron), Ali is his mawlā.”’ The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—is, by consensus, the mawlā of Abū Bakr, Umar, and all the other Companions. Thus Ali is their mawlā, and therefore he is the imam.

And in the tafsīr of al-Thalabī (1): ‘When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was at Ghadīr Khumm, he summoned the people and they gathered. He took Ali by the hand and said:

“Whoever has me as his mawlā, Ali is his mawlā.”

Word of this spread and flew across the lands (2). When news of it reached al-Hārith ibn al-Numān al-Fihrī, he came to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—riding his she-camel. Upon reaching al-Abtah, he dismounted, made her kneel, and tethered her. He then approached the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace (3)—who was amid a gathering of the Companions, and said:

“O Muhammad, you commanded us on Allah’s authority to testify that there is no deity but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah, and we accepted (4) this from you. You commanded us to perform the five prayers, and we accepted that from you. You commanded us to pay zakāt on our wealth (5), and we accepted that from you. You commanded us to fast for a month (6), and we accepted that from you. You commanded us to perform pilgrimage to the House, and we accepted that from you. Then you were not satisfied
