Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Moreover, the supplication that he ascribed to the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—following the giving of the ring in charity is among the most blatant lies. It is well known that, when such spending was needed, the Companions spent in the cause of Allah that which was far greater in value and benefit than giving a ring to a beggar.

In the two Sahih collections (1), it is narrated that the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—said:

“No wealth has benefited me as Abu Bakr’s wealth has.” (2)

“The person who has favored me most through his companionship and wealth is Abu Bakr. Had I been taking anyone on earth as my closest friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr as my closest friend.” (3)

Uthmān “gave a thousand camels in charity in the cause of Allah during the Expedition of Hardship, whereupon the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—said: ‘Whatever Uthmān does after this day will not harm him.’” (4)

(1) N, S, and B read: “and in the Sahih.” (2) This hadith was cited earlier at 5/21. (3) The latter part of this hadith was cited earlier at 1/512–513. In my note on it, I mentioned that it was narrated by Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—and listed the places where it is recorded; refer back to that note. Here is its full text in al-Bukhārī, 1/96 (Book of Prayer, chapter “The Small Doorway and Passageway in the Mosque”), from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: The Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—delivered a sermon and said, “Allah gave a servant the choice between this world and what is with Him, and the servant chose what is with Allah.” Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—wept. I said to myself, “Why is this elderly man weeping merely because Allah gave a servant the choice between this world and what is with Him, and the servant chose what is with Allah?” The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—was that servant, and Abū Bakr understood this better than any of us. The Prophet said, “Abū Bakr, do not weep. The person who has favored me most through his companionship and wealth is Abū Bakr. Had I been taking anyone from my nation as my closest friend, I would have taken Abū Bakr; rather, there remain the brotherhood and affection of Islam. No door into the mosque shall remain without being closed, except the door of Abū Bakr.” (4) The hadith—with some variation in wording—is narrated from ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Samura—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 5/289 (Book of Virtues, chapter “The Virtues of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān”). It begins: “ʿUthmān came to the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—with one thousand dinars,” and the narration continues. It states that the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—said twice, “Whatever ʿUthmān does after today will not harm him.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a hasan gharīb hadith through this route.” The hadith also appears in al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 5/36. Another hadith appears in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 5/288–289, in the same book and chapter, from ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Khabbāb. It states that the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—urged contributions for the Army of Hardship. ʿUthmān said, “Messenger of Allah, I pledge one hundred camels.” He then offered two hundred camels, followed by three hundred camels. The Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—said, “There is no blame upon ʿUthmān for whatever he does after this; there is no blame upon ʿUthmān for whatever he does after this.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a gharīb hadith through this route.” This hadith appears twice in Kitāb Fadāʾil al-Sahāba (The Book of the Virtues of the Companions), 1/504–505, hadith nos. 822 and 823. The editor said of each hadith: “Its isnād (chain of transmission) is weak.”
