Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—but no one gave me anything.” Ali was bowing, so he gestured with his right little finger (1), on which he was wearing a ring (2). The beggar came over and took the ring (3), all in full view of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—(4). When he had finished his prayer, he raised his head toward heaven and said:
“O Allah, Moses implored You and said (5):
‘My Lord, expand my breast for me, make my task easy for me, untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my words, and appoint for me a minister from my family—Aaron, my brother. Strengthen me through him, and let him share in my task.’
[Surah Tā Hā: 25–32]
(6) You then sent down to him a Quranic revelation declaring:
‘We will strengthen your arm through your brother and grant you both authority, so they will not be able to reach either of you because of Our signs.’
[Surah al-Qasas: 35]
O Allah, I am Muhammad, Your Prophet and Your chosen one. O Allah, expand my breast for me, make my task easy for me, and appoint for me a minister from my family—Ali (7); strengthen my back through him.”
Abu Dharr said: “The words (8) of [Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—] had scarcely come to an end when Gabriel descended to him from Allah (9) and said, ‘O Muhammad, recite.’
