Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

then it may be said:

Grant that this is so. Why do you say that eliminating it is obligatory? It is well known that illnesses (1), worries, and sorrows exist, as do calamities (2) affecting family and wealth, high prices, and blights that strike fruit. Nor (3) is the harm suffered by one who has been wronged any greater than what he suffers from these causes, yet Allah Most High has not eliminated them.

Third: As for his statement:

“When ability and motive are established and any deterrent is absent, the act is necessary.”

It may be said to him: Why (4) do you say that the motive is present and the deterrent absent?

As for his statement (5):

“The need (6) of the world (7) provides a motive for it.”

It may be said to him: A motive is something that motivates the agent. Why, then, do you say that mere need constitutes a motive for the Lord Most High in this matter?

The same applies to his statement:

“and any deterrent is absent.”

You have merely alleged that the harm in question is absent. Why do you say that no harm (8) is involved in this? It is like saying that any one of us (9) needs wealth (10), health, strength, and other such things.

(1) M reads: “afflictions.” (2) M reads: “then calamities.” (3) B reads: “and it is not.” (4) M reads: “and why.” (5) N and M read: “his statement.” (6) M reads: “because the need of.” (7) N and M read: “knowledge,” which is an error. (8) M reads: “that there is no harm.” (9) “Of us” is absent from M. (10) M reads: “perfection.”
