Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

and the most learned and devout among them is a polytheist who worships the stars and idols; the utmost he can attain is to become a sorcerer or soothsayer with a familiar spirit from among the jinn (1). Among them are forms of polytheism and depravity that make them worse than the soothsayers found among the Arabs.

No rational person can doubt that the ascendancy of such people over the lands of Islam and over the relatives of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—from Banū Hāshim, such as the descendants of al-Abbās and others—through killing and bloodshed; taking women captive and deeming sexual relations with them lawful; taking children captive, enslaving them, and forcing them from the religion of Allah into disbelief; killing people of knowledge and religion who are devoted to the Quran and prayer; honoring idol-houses—known as badhkhānāt (2)—synagogues, and churches above mosques; and elevating the polytheists and the People of the Book, including Christians and others, above the Muslims, such that the polytheists (3) and the People of the Book possess greater power, their word carries greater authority, and they enjoy greater inviolability than the Muslims—along with other such acts—is more harmful to the Muslims than their fighting one another. Nor can any rational person doubt that, if the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—were to see what had befallen (4) his Ummah because of this, his abhorrence (5) of it and his anger at it would be greater than his abhorrence (6) of two Muslims who fought one another over rule and neither of them took captive

(1) N reads: *ra’y*; M: *riyy*. (2) N reads: *al-badakhānāh*; M: *al-badkhān*. (3) “The polytheists” is omitted only from B. N and M read: *bi-haythu yakūnu al-mushrikīn*, etc. (“such that the polytheists…”), which is an obvious error. (4) N and M read: “what is happening.” (5) N and B read: *karāhiyatuhu* (“his abhorrence”). (6) N and B read: *karāhiyatihi* (“his abhorrence”).
