Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

They were commanded to seek forgiveness for them (1), yet they reviled them. Thus, the sword shall remain drawn against them (2) until the Day of Resurrection (3). Their call is rejected, their banner is routed, and their affairs are in disarray. Whenever they kindle a fire for war, Allah extinguishes it. They strive throughout the land spreading corruption, and Allah does not love those who spread corruption.

Abū al-Qāsim al-Tabarī also transmitted, in Commentary on the Foundations of the Sunnah, words to this effect through the narration of Wahb ibn Baqiyya al-Wāsitī, from Muhammad ibn Hajar al-Bāhilī (4), from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Mālik ibn Mighwal. This report (5) has been narrated from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Mālik ibn Mighwal through several routes that corroborate one another, with some containing additions not found in others. However, Abd al-Rahmān ibn Mālik [ibn Mighwal] (6) is weak (7), while al-Shabī’s condemnation of them is established through other routes.

The designation Rāfida only came into use when they deserted Zayd ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn during the caliphate of Hishām. The episode involving Zayd ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn occurred after the year twenty—

(1) A and L read: “They were commanded to seek forgiveness”; B reads: “They were commanded to seek forgiveness for them.” (2) A reads: “Thus the sword is drawn against them”; B reads: “And the sword is drawn against them”; L reads: “Thus the sword is drawn” (“against them” is omitted). (3) “Until the Day of Resurrection” is omitted from M. (4) A and B read: “Muhammad ibn Hajam.” I found no mention of him. (5) A, L, and B read: “And this report”; M reads: “Thus this matter,” which is a corruption. (6) “Ibn Mighwal” is added in A, L, and B. (7) See the entry on Ibn Mighwal in *Mīzān al-I'tidāl*, 2:584–85, and *Lisān al-Mīzān*, 3:427–28; neither work gives the year of his death. Al-Khazrajī, however, states in *al-Khulāsa*, p. [0–9]68, that his father, Mālik ibn Mighwal, died in 158. In his entry on him in *Mīzān al-I'tidāl*, al-Dhahabī states: “He narrated from his father and from al-A'mash. Ahmad and al-Dāraqutnī said: ‘He is *matrūk* (abandoned as a transmitter).’ Abū Dāwūd said: ‘He is a liar,’ and on another occasion: ‘He fabricates hadith.’ Al-Nasā'ī and others said: ‘He is not trustworthy.’ Ibn Adī said: ‘Despite Abd al-Rahmān’s weakness, his hadith may be recorded.’”
