The Muslims also disputed over the spoils on the day of Badr. Those who had taken them said, “They belong to us.” Those who had pursued the enemy said, “They belong to us.” Those who had remained to guard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—also said, “They belong to us.” Then Allah Most High revealed:
“They ask you about the spoils. Say, ‘The spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger.’ So fear Allah and set matters right among yourselves.”
[Surah al-Anfāl: 1]
There was also disagreement among the Ansār during the incident of the slander, to the point that the two clans nearly fought. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—calmed them. Their dispute concerned a particular man: was it permissible to kill him or not?
On another occasion, a dispute arose among the Ansār because of a Jewish man who reminded them of the wars fought between the Aws and the Khazraj during the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. They began quarreling and nearly fought, whereupon Allah Most High revealed:
“O you who believe, if you obey a group of those who were given the Scripture, they will turn you back into disbelievers after you have believed. How could you disbelieve when Allah’s verses are being recited to you and His Messenger is among you? Whoever holds firmly to Allah has indeed been guided to a straight path.”
[Āl Imrān: 100–101]
It is authentically reported that, while they were on a journey, a man from the Emigrants and a man from the Ansār came to blows. The Emigrant cried, “O Emigrants!” and the man from the Ansār cried, “O Ansār!” The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“Are you invoking the rallying cry of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance while I am in your midst? Abandon it, for it is foul.” (1).
