Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

The Jews count no pronouncement of divorce except one in each menstrual cycle, and neither do the Rāfida. The Jews give their women no bridal gifts; they merely grant them a provision. Likewise, the Rāfida deem temporary marriage lawful (1). The Jews do not permit coitus interruptus with concubines, and neither do the Rāfida.

The Jews prohibit the jirrī and marmāhā fish, and so do the Rāfida. The Jews prohibited rabbit and spleen, and so did the Rāfida. The Jews do not permit wiping over leather socks, and neither do the Rāfida.

The Jews do not make side niches in graves, and neither do the Rāfida, although a side niche was made for our Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The Jews place with their dead, inside the shroud (2), a fresh palm frond (3), and so do the Rāfida.

Then he said to me (4):

“O Mālik, the Jews and Christians surpass them in one respect.

“The Jews were asked:

“‘Who are the best people of your faith?’

“They replied:

“‘The companions of Moses.’

“The Christians were asked:

“‘Who are the best members (5) of your faith?’

“They replied:

“‘The disciples of Jesus.’

“The Rāfida were asked:

“‘Who are the worst people of your faith?’

“They replied:

“‘The disciples of Muhammad’—meaning [by that] (6) Talha and al-Zubayr.”

(1) The passage marked (1–1) appears elsewhere in A, L, and B, with some differences in wording. (2) “Inside the shroud” is omitted from A and B. (3) A and B read: “a palm frond, *abtinatan*”; L reads: “a palm frond, *batinatan*.” (4) “To me” is omitted from A, L, and B. (5) “Members” is omitted from M. (6) “By that” is added in A, L, and B.
