Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

He also said of Khālid:

“A sword(1) among the swords of Allah.”(2)

But when Khālid did what he did among Banū Jadhīma, he said:

“O Allah, I disavow before You what Khālid has done.”(3)

It is also authentically established from him that he said to Ali:

“You are of me, and I am of you.”(4)

When Ali sought the hand of Abū Jahl’s daughter in marriage, the Prophet said:

“The Banū al-Mughīra have asked my permission to marry their daughter(5) to Ali. I do not grant permission; again, I do not grant permission; again, I do not grant permission—unless the son of Abū Tālib wishes to divorce my daughter and marry theirs. By Allah, the daughter of Allah’s Messenger and the daughter of Allah’s enemy shall not be married to the same man.”(6)

In another hadith, he saw Abū Bakr beating his slave while Abū Bakr was in ihram, and he said:

“Look at what this pilgrim in ihram is doing!”(7)

There are many examples of this.

(1) B reads: “Indeed, he is a sword.” (2) The hadith was cited earlier, 4/477. (3) The hadith was cited earlier, 4/486–487. (4) The hadith was cited earlier, 4/34. (5) H, R, and M read: *bintahum* (“their daughter”). (6) This hadith was cited in abridged form shortly above, p. 259. (7) The hadith of Asmā bint Abī Bakr—may Allah be pleased with her—is recorded in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 2/223, Book of Pilgrimage Rites, chapter “A Pilgrim in Ihram Disciplining His Servant.” Its wording is: “We set out with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—as pilgrims. The baggage of Abū Bakr and the Messenger of Allah was loaded on one camel, entrusted to one of Abū Bakr’s servants. Abū Bakr sat waiting for him to come into view. When he appeared, his camel was not with him. Abū Bakr asked, ‘Where is your camel?’ He replied, ‘I lost it last night.’ Abū Bakr said, ‘Only one camel, and you lose it?’ He then began beating him, while the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—smiled and said, ‘Look at what this pilgrim in ihram is doing!’” Ibn Abī Rizma said: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—did no more than say, ‘Look at what this pilgrim in ihram is doing!’ and smile.” The hadith is also recorded in *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 2/978, Book of Pilgrimage Rites, chapter “Exercising Caution While in Ihram.” Ibn al-Athīr also cited it in *Jāmi al-Usūl*, 3/432. The editor—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “Al-Mundhirī stated: ‘Ibn Mājah also transmitted it, and its chain of transmission includes Muhammad ibn Ishāq.’”
