He also said:
“Charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire.”
This was narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who graded it authentic (1).
Allah Most High says:
“O you who believe, shall I direct you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? Believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is better for you, if only you knew. He will forgive you your sins and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of everlasting residence. That is the supreme triumph.”
[Surah al-Saff: 10–12].
It is also recorded in the Sahih:
“The martyr is forgiven everything except debt.” (2)

(1) The hadith is narrated from Muādh ibn Jabal—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 4:124–125 (Book of Faith, chapter: “The Sanctity of Prayer”). It begins: “I was traveling with the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—when I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me to Paradise and keep me away from the Fire.’ He replied, ‘You have asked me about a momentous matter, yet it is easy for anyone for whom Allah makes it easy.’” The hadith also contains the words: “Charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a hasan sahih (good and authentic) hadith.”
The hadith of Muādh is also narrated in Sunan Ibn Mājah, 2:1314–1315 (Book of Tribulations, chapter: “Restraining the Tongue during Tribulation”). These words also occur in another hadith, narrated from Ka'b ibn Ujra—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 2:61–62 (Book of Friday Prayer: Travel, chapter: “The Virtue of Prayer”). It begins: “I seek Allah’s protection for you, O Ka'b ibn Ujra, from rulers who will come after me.” The hadith also contains the words: “Fasting is a shield, and charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a hasan gharīb (good but singularly transmitted) hadith.”
These words also occur in a third hadith, narrated from Anas ibn Mālik—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan Ibn Mājah, 2:1408 (Book of Renunciation, chapter: “Envy”). It begins: “Envy consumes good deeds just as fire consumes firewood, and charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire.” The hadith of Muādh ibn Jabal is also found in al-Musnad, al-Halabī ed., 5:231, 237, 248, and the hadith of Ka'b ibn Ujra in al-Musnad, al-Halabī ed., 3:321, 399.
(2) The hadith is narrated with some variation in wording from Abd Allāh ibn Amr ibn al-Ās—may Allah be pleased with them both—in Muslim, 3:1502 (Book of Governance, chapter: “One Who Is Killed in the Cause of Allah”); and al-Musnad, al-Maārif ed., 12 13.
