with faith and in hope of reward will have his previous sins forgiven.” (1)
He also said:
“Whoever performs the pilgrimage to this House and neither engages in obscene conduct nor commits sin will emerge from his sins as on the day his mother gave birth to him.” (2)
He also said:
“Consider this: if there were a deep river at the door of one of you in which he bathed five times every day, would any dirt remain on him?”
They replied, “No.”
He said, “The five daily prayers are likewise: through them Allah erases sins just as water washes away dirt.”
All of this is recorded in the Sahih (3).
(1) The hadith is narrated in this wording alone, or with the addition: “Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree) out of faith and in hope of reward will have his previous sins forgiven.” It is narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Bukhārī, 1:12 (Book of Faith, chapter: “Fasting Ramadan in Hope of Reward Is Part of Faith”); 3:26 (Book of Fasting, chapter: “Whoever Fasts Ramadan out of Faith, in Hope of Reward, and with Sincere Intention”); 3:45–46 (Book of the Virtue of Laylat al-Qadr, chapter: “The Virtue of Laylat al-Qadr”); Muslim, 1:523–524 (Book of the Prayer of Travelers, chapter: “Encouragement to Perform the Night Prayer during Ramadan”); and Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 2:66–67 (Book of the Detailed Chapters on the Month of Ramadan, chapter: “Night Prayer during Ramadan”).
(2) The hadith is narrated with some variation in wording from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Bukhārī, 2:133 (Book of Hajj, chapter: “The Virtue of an Accepted Hajj”); and Muslim, 2:983 (Book of Hajj, chapter: “The Virtue of Hajj, Umrah, and the Day of Arafa”). It is also found in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Sunan al-Nasāī, Sunan Ibn Mājah, Sunan al-Dārimī, and al-Musnad.
(3) The hadith is narrated without the word ghamran (“deep”) from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Bukhārī, 1:108 (Book of the Times of Prayer, chapter: “The Five Prayers Are an Expiation”); and Muslim, 1:462–463 (Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer, chapter: “Walking to Prayer”). The word ghamran occurs, however, in another hadith with the same meaning, narrated from Jābir ibn Abd Allāh—may Allah be pleased with him—in Muslim, 1:463: “The likeness of the five prayers is that of a deep, flowing river at the door of one of you, in which he bathes five times every day.” He said: “Al-Hasan said, ‘What dirt could that leave?’” Imam Ahmad also narrated this hadith from Jābir—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Musnad, al-Maārif ed., 18:143, no. 9501. In the immediately following hadith, 18:144, no. 9502, he narrated a similar report from Abū Hurayra, from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The hadith of Jābir also appears in al-Musnad, al-Halabī ed., 3:317.
A third hadith, narrated from Sa'd ibn Abī Waqqās—may Allah be pleased with him—appears in al-Musnad, al-Maārif ed., 3:67–68. It begins: “Āmir ibn Sa'd ibn Abī Waqqās reported: I heard Sa'd—or some Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say: ‘There were two brothers…’” It later states that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Did he not use to pray?…” It also contains the words: “The likeness of prayer is that of a deep, fresh, flowing river at a man’s door, into which he plunges…” In the commentary, al-ghamr—with the ghayn bearing a fatha and the mīm vowelless—is defined as “abundant,” meaning that it submerges and covers anyone who enters it.
