Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

As for anyone who relies on reports transmitted by those who are among the most ignorant of people concerning transmitted accounts, the furthest removed from any knowledge of Islamic affairs, and notorious for fabricating copious lies—lies so gross that only beasts would accept them, yet which find acceptance among people who know nothing of Islam, whether they dwell in desert regions or on mountaintops, or in a land whose inhabitants are among the least knowledgeable and the most mendacious—it is such a person who goes astray.

Likewise, it is wholly inconceivable that the doctrine of the Rāfidah could ever gain acceptance among the inhabitants of any major Muslim city in which there are people of knowledge and religion. It gains acceptance only among ignorant people [who have settled in desert regions and mountains] (1), within some quarter of a city or small town, or among a faction who outwardly show people the opposite of what they inwardly conceal, because the falsity of their claims is so manifest. Even when Cairo was under the Ubaydids, who openly professed Shiism, they could not establish it until they prevented its people of knowledge and religion from openly disseminating their knowledge. Despite this, they remained fearful of all the other Muslim cities. An outsider from a distant land would be placed above them (2), so they would conceal their doctrine from him, dissemble before him, and fear him as an obeyed king is feared. This was because they were people of fabrication and falsehood.

Allah Most High said:

“Indeed, those who took the calf will be overtaken by wrath from their Lord and humiliation in the life of this world. Thus do We recompense those who fabricate lies.”

[Surah al-Araf: 152]

Abu Qilābah said: “This applies to every fabricator from this ummah until the Day of Resurrection.”

[Response to the Rāfidī’s claim that Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—ordered the killing of anyone who opposed the four, and then the three]

Likewise, there is his statement:

“He ordered the killing of anyone who opposed [the four, and ordered the killing of anyone who opposed] (3) the three, among whom was Abd al-Rahmān.”
