Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

with his skill (1), and set its crookedness straight through his discipline (2). He crushed (3) hypocrisy beneath his tread, rescued the religion, and defended it (4). When he had restored every right to its rightful holders (5), settled (6) heads securely upon shoulders, and kept people’s blood within their skins (7), death came to him. The breach he left (8) was filled by his equal (9) in mercy and his brother in conduct and justice: that man (10) was Ibn al-Khattāb. [By Allah, what a] (11) mother she was who bore him (12) [and nursed him abundantly] (13)! In him she truly brought forth one without equal (14). He abased the unbelievers and subdued them (15), sent polytheism (16) scattering in every direction (17), and opened up the earth and subdued it (18),

(1) (N) and (M) read *bi-tannihi*. (R) and *al-Riyād al-Nadira* read *bi-tayyihi*. “He repaired its disarray” means that he gathered together what had become scattered in its affairs. (2) (B) reads *bi-thifāqihi*, which is a typographical error. *Al-awad* means crookedness, while *al-thiqāf* means straightening what is crooked. (3) *Fa-daqqa* (“he crushed”): this is the reading in (H). (N) and (M) read *fa-ndafara*; (R) and (Y), *fa-ndaqara*; and (B) and *al-Muntaqā*, *fa-waqadha*. *Al-Riyād al-Nadira* reads *imdhaqara*. The reading adopted here is likely correct. (4) *Fa-mana'ahu* (“and he defended it”): this is the reading in (H) and (R). (N) and (M) read *fa-naghahu*; (Y), *fa-na'ahu*; and (B), *fa-na'ashahu*. *Al-Muntaqā* and *al-Riyād al-Nadira* read *bi-na'shihi*. *Intāsha al-dīna* means that he took hold of the religion, rescued it, and raised it up. (5) (N) and (M) read *fa-lammā rāha al-haqqu ilā ahlihi* (“when the right returned to its rightful holders”). (H), (R), and (Y) read *fa-lammā zāha al-haqqa ilā ahlihi*. The adopted reading is from (B), *al-Muntaqā*, and *al-Riyād al-Nadira*. It means that he restored the right to its rightful holders. (6) (N) and (M) read *wa-qarrat* (“and [the heads] came to rest”). (7) This is the plural of *ihāb*, an animal skin before it is tanned. (8) *Thulmatan* (“a breach”): this is the reading in (B) and *al-Muntaqā*. All the other manuscripts read *thulmatahu* (“his breach”). (9) (N) and (M) read *bi-nazarihi* (“by his gaze”). (10) (H), (R), and (Y) read *dhālika* (“that”). (11) *Lillāhi* (“by Allah”) is omitted from (N) and (M). (12) (B) and *al-Muntaqā* read *hafalat lahu* (“she had abundant milk for him”). (13) *Wa-darrat alayhi* (“and she gave him milk in abundance”) is omitted from (N) and (M). (14) (N), (R), and (Y) read *awjadat* (“brought forth”). (15) (B) and *al-Muntaqā* read *fa-qabbaha al-kufra* (“and he vilified unbelief”). The adopted reading is from the remaining manuscripts and al-Tantāwī’s *Abū Bakr*. *Fa-fannakha al-kafarata* means “he humiliated the unbelievers,” while *dayyakhahā* means “he subdued and vanquished them.” (16) (N) and (M) read *al-kufra* (“unbelief”). (17) *Shadhara madhara* means “in every direction.” (18) (H) and (R) read *wa-naja'ahā*, while (B) and (M) read *wa-baja'ahā*. The adopted reading is from (Y), (N), and *al-Muntaqā*. *Lisān al-Arab* cites the report in which Ā'isha—may Allah be pleased with her—mentioned Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—and said: “He subdued the land, and it disgorged its sustenance.” That is, he conquered and humbled its inhabitants and extracted from it the treasures and wealth of kings.
