Atiyya (1) said to us, ‘Go to him’ (2). So we sat with him, and they conversed. Abū Ishāq said, ‘I left Kufa when no one doubted the merit of Abū Bakr and Umar or that they should be accorded precedence. Now I have returned, and people are saying this and that; yet, by Allah, I do not know what they are saying.’”
He also said: Al-Naysābūrī narrated to us; Abū Usāma al-Halabī narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Damra narrated to us, from Saīd ibn Hasan (3), who said:
“I heard Layth ibn Abī Sulaym (4) say: ‘I lived to see the early Shia, and they preferred no one over Abū Bakr and Umar.’”
Ahmad ibn Hanbal said:
“Ibn Uyayna narrated to us, from Khālid ibn Salama (5), from al-Shabī, from Masrūq, who said: ‘Love for Abū Bakr and Umar and recognition of their merit are part of the Sunnah.’”
(* Masrūq was among the most eminent Followers of Kufa. Tāwūs likewise said:

(1) His biography appears in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 4:364–365. It records that Abū Ishāq al-Sabīī narrated from him, although Abū Ishāq was older than he was. Ibn Hajar declared him trustworthy.
(2) (N) and (M) read: “one of his clients.”
(3) (N) and (M) read: “Ibn Abī Damra narrated to us, and [he narrated] from Saīd ibn Jubayr.” I consider the names likely to have been corrupted. Perhaps the correct name is Damra ibn Saīd ibn Abī Hasana, or Ibn Abī Hanna. Ibn Hajar mentions him in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 4:461, and he was trustworthy.
(4) Al-Dhahabī mentions him in *Mīzān al-Itidāl*, 3:420–423. Scholars differed concerning him: some declared him trustworthy, while many considered him weak, including al-Dāraqutnī. Al-Dhahabī cites the report in the following wording: Ibn Shawdhab reported from Layth, who said, “I lived to see the early Shia in Kufa, and they did not prefer anyone over Abū Bakr and Umar.” Ibn Shawdhab was Abd Allah ibn Shawdhab al-Khurasānī. Ibn Hajar states in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 5:255: “Damra ibn Rabīa narrated from him and was his transmitter.” Perhaps, then, the correct isnad is: “Damra narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn Shawdhab.”
(5) (N) and (M) read: “Khālid ibn Maslama narrated to us.” This is an error. He was Khālid ibn Salama ibn al-Ās ibn Hishām ibn al-Mughīra al-Makhzūmī, Abū Salama. Al-Shabī and the two Sufyāns narrated from him. His biography appears in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 3:95–96.

، فَجَلَسْنَا إِلَيْهِ، فَتَحَدَّثُوا،
فَقَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ:
خَرَجْتُ مِنَ الْكُوفَةِ وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَشُكُّ فِي فَضْلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَتَقْدِيمِهِمَا، وَقَدِمْتُ الْآنَ وَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ وَيَقُولُونَ، وَلَا وَاللَّهِ مَا أَدْرِي مَا يَقُولُونَ
".
وَقَالَ:
حَدَّثَنَا النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ الْحَلَبِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا ضَمْرَةُ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ حَسَنٍ

سَمِعْتُ لَيْثَ بْنَ أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ

يَقُولُ: أَدْرَكْتُ الشِّيعَةَ الْأُولَى وَمَا يُفَضِّلُونَ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ أَحَدًا.
وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ:
" حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ

عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ:
حُبٌّ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَمَعْرِفَةُ فَضْلِهِمَا مِنَ السُّنَّةِ

وَكَذَلِكَ قَالَ طَاوُسٌ:

(٤) ذَكَرَهُ الذَّهَبِيُّ فِي مِيزَانِ الِاعْتِدَالِ ٣/٤٢٠ - ٤٢٣ وَهُوَ مُخْتَلَفٌ فِيهِ وَثَّقَهُ الْبَعْضُ وَضَعَّفَهُ كَثِيرُونَ مِنْهُمُ الدَّارَقُطْنِيُّ، وَأَوْرَدَ الذَّهَبِيُّ الْخَبَرَ بِلَفْظِ: قَالَ ابْنُ شَوْذَبٍ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، قَالَ: أَدْرَكْتُ الشِّيعَةَ الْأُولَى بِالْكُوفَةِ وَمَا يُفَضِّلُونَ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ أَحَدًا. وَابْنُ شَوْذَبٍ هُوَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ شَوْذَبٍ الْخُرَاسَانِيُّ، قَالَ ابْنُ حَجَرٍ ٥/٢٥٥: وَعَنْهُ ضَمْرَةُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ وَهُوَ رَاوِيَتُهُ، فَلَعَلَّ السَّنَدَ صِحَّتُهُ: حَدَّثَنَا ضَمْرَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَوْذَبٍ.
