severity; and during the Prophet’s lifetime—peace and blessings be upon him—the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—would consult both of them.

It is reported that he said:

“Whenever you two agree upon something, I will not oppose you.” (1)

It is established in the Sahih that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said during one of his military expeditions:

“If the people obey Abū Bakr and Umar, they will be rightly guided.” (2)

In another narration in the Sahih:

“What do you think the people did when they could not find their Prophet and the time for prayer had come?”

We replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”

He said, “Are Abū Bakr and Umar not among them? If they obey them, [then they and their community have followed right guidance; but if they disobey them] (3), then they and their community have gone astray.” He said this three times. (4)

(1) Al-Haythamī narrated in *Majma al-Zawā’id*, 9/52, from al-Barā’ ibn Āzib that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said to Abū Bakr and Umar: “Praise be to Allah, who strengthened me through you both. Were it not that you sometimes disagreed before me, I would never disagree with you.” Al-Haythamī said: “Al-Tabarānī narrated it in *al-Awsat*. Its chain includes Habīb ibn Abī Habīb, Mālik’s scribe, who is *matrūk* (rejected).” Al-Haythamī then narrated in 9/53, from Ibn Ghanm, that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said to Abū Bakr and Umar: “If you two were to agree in a consultation, I would not oppose you.” Al-Haythamī said: “Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are trustworthy, except that Ibn Ghanm did not hear from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him.” (2) These words form part of a lengthy hadith narrated from Abū Qatāda al-Ansārī in *Muslim*, 1/472–474, Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer, chapter “Making Up a Missed Prayer and the Recommendation to Do So Promptly.” It begins: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—addressed us and said: ‘You will travel during this evening and night…’” It also contains: “If they obey Abū Bakr and Umar, they will be rightly guided.” The hadith appears in *al-Musnad*, al-Halabī ed., 5/298, with the wording: “If the people obey Abū Bakr and Umar, they will be rightly guided.” He said this three times. (3) The words enclosed in square brackets are absent from (N). (4) I could not locate this hadith.
