Then he said:

“If the Commander of the Faithful (1) and Uthmān agree, the decision shall be as they say. If they split three against three, the decision shall be that of the side joined by Abd al-Rahmān ibn Awf.”

This was because he knew that Alī (2) and Uthmān would not agree on a single course (3), and that Abd al-Rahmān would not divert the matter (4) away from his brother—namely Uthmān—and his cousin (5). He then ordered that they be beheaded if they delayed pledging allegiance for three days (6), even though, according to them, they were among the ten promised Paradise (7). He ordered that anyone among them who opposed the four be killed (8), and that anyone who opposed the three [among whom was] Abd al-Rahmān (9) be killed. All of this is contrary to the religion.

He said to Alī:

“If (10) you assume it—though they will not do so (11)—you will surely lead them along the clear, straight path.”

This indicated that they would not appoint him to it.

He said to Uthmān:

“If you assume it, the clan of Abū Muayt (12) will surely ride roughshod over the people; and if (13) you do so, you will surely be killed.”

This implied an order that he be killed.”

(9) ك reads: “the three among whom was Abd al-Rahmān”; all other copies read: “the three, one of whom was Abd al-Rahmān.” (10) ح and ب read: “to Alī: ‘If’”; ك reads: “to Alī—peace be upon him—‘and if.’” (11) ح and ب read: *bi-fāilīn* (“ones who would do so”). (12) ن and م read: “to Ibn Abī Muayt”; ح, ر, and ب read: “the clan of Banī Mughayt”; and ك reads: “the clan of Abī Mughayt.” The reading I have adopted is that found in ي and the printed ك after correction of the original. (13) ك reads: “If indeed.”

بِالضَّعْفِ وَالْقُصُورِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنِ اجْتَمَعَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (١) وَعُثْمَانُ، فَالْقَوْلُ مَا قَالَاهُ، وَإِنْ صَارُوا ثَلَاثَةً فَالْقَوْلُ قَوْلُ الَّذِي صَارَ فِيهِمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، لِعِلْمِهِ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا (٢) وَعُثْمَانَ لَا يَجْتَمِعَانِ عَلَى أَمْرٍ وَاحِدٍ (٣) ، وَأَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ لَا يَعْدِلُ الْأَمْرَ (٤) عَنْ أَخِيهِ وَهُوَ عُثْمَانُ وَابْنُ عَمِّهِ (٥) ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِضَرْبِ أَعْنَاقِهِمْ إِنْ تَأَخَّرُوا عَنِ الْبَيْعَةِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ (٦) ، مَعَ أَنَّهُمْ عِنْدَهُمْ مِنَ الْعَشَرَةِ الْمُبَشَّرَةِ بِالْجَنَّةِ (٧) ، وَأَمَرَ بِقَتْلِ مَنْ خَالَفَ الْأَرْبَعَةَ مِنْهُمْ (٨) ، وَأَمَرَ بِقَتْلِ مَنْ خَالَفَ الثَّلَاثَةَ [الَّذِينَ بَيْنَهُمْ] عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ (٩) ، وَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ مُخَالِفٌ لِلدِّينِ. وَقَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ: وَإِنْ (١٠) وَلِيتَهَا - وَلَيْسُوا فَاعِلِينَ (١١) - لَتَرْكَبَنَّهُمْ عَلَى الْمَحَجَّةِ الْبَيْضَاءِ، وَفِيهِ إِشَارَةٌ إِلَى أَنَّهُمْ لَا يُوَلُّونَهُ إِيَّاهَا، قَالَ لِعُثْمَانَ: إِنْ وَلِيتَهَا لَتَرْكَبَنَّ آلُ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ (١٢) عَلَى رِقَابِ النَّاسِ، وَإِنْ (١٣) فَعَلْتَ لَتُقْتَلَنَّ. وَفِيهِ إِشَارَةٌ إِلَى الْأَمْرِ بِقَتْلِهِ ".
