[Chapter: The Rāfidī’s claim that two women brought a dispute before Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—concerning a child, and Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—gave him the ruling]
Chapter (1)
The Rāfidī said (2):
“Two women disputed over a child, and he did not (3) know the ruling. He therefore turned in the matter (4) to the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (5). The Commander of the Faithful summoned the two women (6) and admonished them, but neither relented.
He then said, ‘Bring me a saw.’
The two women asked, ‘What are you going to do with it?’ (7)
He replied, ‘I will cut him in two between you, so that (8) each of you may take half.’ One of them agreed (9), while the other said, ‘For Allah’s sake, for Allah’s sake, Abū al-Hasan! If there is no avoiding that, I relinquish him to her.’
Ali said, ‘Allah is the Greatest! (10) He is your son, not hers. Had he been her son, she would have felt compassion for him.’ The other woman then admitted that her companion was in the right. Umar rejoiced and prayed for the Commander of the Faithful.”
