Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

the cause of Allah until the Chosen One from the House of Muhammad emerges and a caller from heaven proclaims:

“Follow him.”

The Jews said:

“Allah has prescribed fifty prayers for us each day and night.”

The Rāfida say the same. The Jews do not perform the Maghrib prayer until the stars have appeared in profusion. It has been reported from the Prophet (1)—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—:

(“My nation will remain upon Islam so long as they do not delay (2) the Maghrib prayer until the stars have appeared in profusion, in imitation of the Jews.”)

The Rāfida do the same. When the Jews pray, they turn slightly away from the qibla; the Rāfida do the same.

The Jews sway (3) during their prayer; the Rāfida do the same. The Jews let their garments hang loosely (4) during prayer. It has reached me “that the Messenger of Allah (5)—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—passed by a man whose garment was hanging loose, so he folded it around him” (6). The Jews prostrate during the dawn prayer

(1) N and M read: “from our Prophet.” (2) A, L, and B read: “is delayed.” (3) M reads: “sways.” The word is illegible in N. (4) N, M, and L read: “its garments.” (5) A, L, and B read: “that the Prophet.” (6) M reads: “so he cut it off him.” Ibn al-Athīr said regarding *sadl* in *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth*: “It means wrapping oneself in one’s garment and placing one’s hands inside it, then bowing and prostrating while remaining in that position. The Jews used to do this, and it was therefore prohibited. This applies equally to a shirt and to other garments. It is also said to mean placing the middle of the *izār* over one’s head and letting its two ends hang down to one’s right and left without placing them over one’s shoulders.” I have not found the report mentioned by Ibn Taymiyya. However, Abū Dāwūd narrated in his *Sunan*, 1/245 (Book of Prayer, chapter “Reports Concerning *Sadl* during Prayer”), from Abū Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—forbade *sadl* during prayer and forbade a man to cover his mouth. He then reported from Ibn Jurayj, who said: “Most often when I saw Atā praying, he was practicing *sadl*.” Abū Dāwūd said: “This weakens that hadith.” Al-Tirmidhī cited the hadith of Abū Hurayra in his *Sunan*, 1/234–235, and then said: “The scholars differed regarding *sadl* during prayer. Some regarded it as disliked, saying: ‘This is what the Jews do.’ Others said that *sadl* during prayer is disliked only when a person is wearing a single garment; if he lets a garment hang over a shirt, there is no harm in it. This is the view of Ahmad. Ibn al-Mubārak regarded *sadl* during prayer as disliked.” The hadith of Abū Hurayra is also found in *al-Musnad* (al-Maʿārif ed.), 15/76 (see the commentary of Shaykh Ahmad Shākir—may Allah have mercy on him), and 16/207, 228, and 239.
