from among them to another man, who produced a document and handed it to him. When he read it, his eyes filled with tears. He then raised his head toward them and said, ‘People of Najran—or my companions—by Allah, this is in my own handwriting, dictated to me by Umar.’
They said, ‘Commander of the Faithful, grant us what it contains.’
I drew near to him and said, ‘If he is ever to overrule Umar, today he will do so.’
He replied, ‘I will not overturn anything Umar did. Umar was sound in judgment. Umar gave you better than what he took from you, and he took from you better than what he gave. Nor did Umar derive any benefit by taking anything for himself; he took it only for the Muslim community.’”(1)
Ahmad, al-Tirmidhī, and others also narrated it. Ahmad said:
Abū(2) Abd al-Rahmān al-Muqri narrated to us: Haywah ibn Shurayh narrated to us: Bakr ibn Amr al-Maāfirī narrated to us, from Mishrah ibn Hāān(3), from Uqbah ibn Āmir al-Juhanī, who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—say:
“If there were to be a prophet after me, it would be Umar ibn al-Khattāb.”(4)
