Ibn Wahb narrated from Yahyā ibn Ayyūb, from Ibn Ajlān, from Nāfi, from Ibn Umar, that Umar ibn al-Khattāb “dispatched an army and appointed over them a man named Sāriya. He said:

“While Umar(1) was addressing the people, he began calling out from the pulpit, ‘Sāriya, take to the mountain! Sāriya, take to the mountain!’

“He said: When the army’s messenger returned, Umar questioned him. He replied, ‘Commander of the Faithful, we encountered our enemy, and they defeated us(2). Then suddenly a voice cried, “Sāriya, take to the mountain! Sāriya, take to the mountain!” So we put our backs to the mountain, and Allah defeated them.’

“Umar ibn al-Khattāb was then told, ‘You were calling out those very words from the pulpit.’”(3)

It is reported in the two Sahih collections that Umar said:

“Take the Station of Abraham as a place of prayer.”

[Surah al-Baqara: 125]

“I also said, ‘Messenger of Allah, both righteous and wicked men enter upon your wives. If only you instructed them to observe the veil.’ He said: Then the verse prescribing the veil was revealed. When the wives of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—joined together against him out of jealousy, I said to them:

“Perhaps, if he divorces you, his Lord will replace you with wives better than you.”

“And it was revealed exactly so.”(4)

It is also reported in the two Sahih collections that “when Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salūl died, the Messenger of
