It has been transmitted through several sound routes from Makhūl, from Ghudayf, from Abū Dharr, who said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say:
‘Allah has placed the truth upon Umar’s tongue, so that he speaks it.’
Another wording reads:
‘He placed the truth upon Umar’s tongue(1) and in his heart—or in his heart and upon his tongue.’”
This has also been narrated from Ibn Umar and Abū Hurayra.(2)
It has been established through more than one route from al-Shaʿbī, from Ali, who said:
“We did not consider it unlikely that the sakīna spoke through Umar’s tongue.”
This is reliably established from al-Shaʿbī, from Ali. Al-Shaʿbī had seen Ali and was among those best informed about his companions and reports.(3)
It is reported in the two Sahih collections that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“There were inspired people among the nations before you. If there is one of them in my nation, it is Umar ibn al-Khattāb.”(4)
It is reliably established from Tāriq ibn Shihāb that he said:
A man would relate an account to Umar and include a lie in it, whereupon Umar would say, “Hold this back.” He would then continue relating the account, and Umar would say, “Hold this back.” The man would then say, “Everything I have told you is true except what you instructed me to hold back.”
