It is authentically established that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“The best of your leaders are those whom you love and who love you, for whom you pray and who pray for you. The worst of your leaders are those whom you hate and who hate you, whom you curse and who curse you.” (1)
No Muslim killed Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—because the Muslims were pleased with him. Rather, he was killed by a Persian Magian unbeliever.
His fear of Allah arose from the completeness of his knowledge, for Allah Most High says:
“Only those of His servants who possess knowledge truly fear Allah.”
[Surah Fatir: 28]
The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—would pray while his chest emitted, from weeping, a sound like that of a boiling cauldron. (2) Ibn Masud recited Surah al-Nisa to him. When he reached the words:
“How will it be when We bring a witness from every nation and bring you as a witness against these people?”
[Surah al-Nisa: 41]
he said, “Enough.” I looked at his eyes and saw them overflowing with tears. (3)
Allah Most High also says:
“Say: I am not the first of the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you.”
[Surah al-Ahqaf: 9]
