you?” He replied (1), “Father, the truth is from your Lord, so never be (2) among the doubters.” He said (3), “As for me, if Allah wills, you will find me among the steadfast (4).”
Muādh kept him through that night (5), then buried him the following day. Muādh was then stricken (6). The narrator related that when his throes—[the throes of death] (7)—grew intense, he endured such throes as no one else had ever endured. Whenever he regained consciousness, he opened his eyes and said (8), “My Lord, choke me as You will (9). By Your might, You surely know that my heart loves You.”
Likewise, the words, “By the Lord of the Kaaba, I have triumphed,” were uttered by someone of lesser rank than Alī. Āmir ibn Fuhayra, the freedman of Abū Bakr al-Siddīq, said them when he was killed on the day of Bir Maūna. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—had dispatched him with a detachment toward Najd.
Scholars of prophetic biography said:
Jabbār ibn Sulmā stabbed him, piercing him through. Āmir said, “By Allah, I have triumphed!”
Jabbār asked, “What did he mean when he said, ‘By Allah, I have triumphed’?”
Urwa ibn al-Zubayr said, “They believed that the angels buried him” (10).
