Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

two rewards, as with al-Siddīq’s judgment. This is better than a judgment whose author can receive, at most, only one reward.

Qays ibn Abbād said to Alī:

“Tell me about this campaign of yours: was it undertaken pursuant to an instruction that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—entrusted to you, or was it a judgment you formed?”

He replied:

“Rather, it was a judgment I formed.” This was narrated by Abū Dāwūd and others (1).

If a judgment such as this, which resulted in the bloodshed that occurred, does not prevent the one who made it from being a leader, then what of that judgment whose soundness the overwhelming majority of scholars have affirmed?

As for his claim that Abū Bakr issued seventy different rulings concerning the grandfather (2), this is a lie. It is not a statement of Abū Bakr, nor has it been reported from [Abū Bakr] (3). Rather, reporting this of Abū

(1) This hadith is narrated twice from Qays ibn Abbād in *Sahīh Muslim*, 4/2143–2144 (*Book of the Characteristics of the Hypocrites and the Rulings Concerning Them*, at the beginning of the book, hadith nos. 9 and 10). The first narration reads: I said to Ammār, “Tell me about this action of yours concerning Alī. Was it based on an opinion you formed, or on something the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—entrusted to you?” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—gave us no instruction that he did not give to all people. Hudhayfa, however, informed me that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: ‘Among my Companions are twelve hypocrites. Eight of them will not enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. The *dubayla* (a fatal internal abscess) will dispose of eight of them; as for the other four…’” I do not remember what Shuba said concerning them. Al-Nawawī states in his commentary on *Sahīh Muslim*, 17/125: “The Prophet’s words, ‘Among my Companions,’ mean those who are regarded as belonging to his companionship, just as the second narration says, ‘Among my nation.’ The initial consonant of *sam al-khiyāt* may take an *a*, *u*, or *i* vowel. The first is the best-known pronunciation and is the reading adopted by the seven canonical reciters. The expression means ‘the eye of a needle.’ As for *al-dubayla*, it is spelled with an unpointed *dāl*, followed by a single-dotted *bā*. It is explained in the hadith as a lamp of fire.” The hadith is also narrated in an abridged form, as Ibn Taymiyya cites it here, in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 4/300 (*Book of the Sunnah*, “Chapter on the Evidence for Refraining from Speech concerning *fitna* [civil strife]). (2) (N): “the hadith,” which is a textual corruption. (3) (N) and (M): “from him.”
