the man who said:
“I am its tried-and-tested counselor,
and its well-supported pillar”
was al-Hubāb ibn al-Mundhir.
In Sahih al-Bukhārī (1), it is related on the authority of ‘Ā’isha—may Allah be pleased with her—that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—died while Abū Bakr was at al-Sunh (2). ‘Umar then stood and said, “By Allah, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—has not died!”
He said (3): “And ‘Umar said, ‘By Allah, no thought entered my heart (4) except that—and Allah would surely resurrect him, whereupon he would surely cut off the hands and feet of men.’ Then Abū Bakr [—may Allah be pleased with him—] (5) came, drew back the covering from the Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—[and kissed him] (6). He said (7), ‘May my father and mother be sacrificed for you (8)! You were good in life and in death. By Him in whose hand is my soul, Allah will never cause you to taste death twice.’
“He then went out and said, ‘O you who are swearing, take it easy.’ When Abū Bakr began to speak, ‘Umar sat down. Abū Bakr praised and extolled Allah, and said (9), ‘Let it be known: whoever worshipped Muhammad (10), Muhammad has died; but whoever worshipped Allah, Allah is living and never dies. Allah Most High said (11): “Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die.”
