Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

It is reported in the two Sahih collections that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Allah’s right hand is full; no expenditure diminishes it. It pours forth night and day. Have you considered all that He has spent since He created the heavens and the earth? Indeed, it has not diminished what is in His right hand. Justice is in His other hand; He lowers and raises.” (1)

Thus, benevolence is in His right hand and justice is in His other hand, and both His hands are blessed right hands.

As [established] in the Sahih (2), the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Those who act justly will be with Allah on the Day of Resurrection, upon pulpits of light at the right hand of the Most Merciful—and both His hands are right hands—those who act justly toward their families and those under their authority.” (3)

A fuller discussion of this belongs elsewhere.

The point here is that when He—glorified is He—creates something He hates and detests for the sake of a wisdom that He loves and approves, He wills everything He creates, even though some created things are created only for the sake of something else, while He hates them and does not love them.

This distinction between love and will is the position of the Salaf, the hadith scholars, the jurists, and most Sunni theologians, such as the Hanafīs and the Karrāmiyya (4),

(1) This hadith was cited earlier, 1/139. (2) N and M read: “as stated in the Sahīh.” (3) This hadith, with some variation in wording, is narrated from Abd Allah ibn Amr ibn al-As, may Allah be pleased with him, in Muslim, 3/1458 (Book of Governance, chapter “The Merit of the Just Ruler”), and Sunan al-Nasā’ī, 8/195–196 (Book of Judicial Conduct, chapter “The Merit of a Just Judge in His Judgments”). In both works, the hadith begins: “Indeed, those who act justly are with Allah upon pulpits…” It is also found in al-Musnad (al-Ma‘ārif ed.), 9/249–250, 254. (4) M reads: “and the Mālikīs.”
