praise of Him. As Allah Most High says:
“So call upon Him, devoting your worship sincerely to Him. All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.”
[Surah Ghāfir 65]
Ibn ʿAbbās would say, “When you say, ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,’ then say, ‘All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds,’” interpreting this verse accordingly (1).
In the Sunan of Ibn Mājah and other works, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—is reported to have said:
“The best remembrance is: ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,’ and the best supplication is: ‘All praise is for Allah.’” (2)
(1) Al-Tabarī cited this report with its chain of transmission in his *Tafsīr* (Būlāq ed.), 24/53. His exact wording, from Ibn ʿAbbās, is: “Whoever says, ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,’ should immediately thereafter say, ‘All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.’ This is the meaning of His words: ‘So call upon Him, devoting worship sincerely to Him. All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.’” Ibn Kathīr quoted his words in the al-Shaʿb edition, 7/145.
(2) The hadith is narrated from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh—may Allah be pleased with him—in *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 5/130 (Book of Supplications, chapter: Reports That the Muslim’s Supplication Is Answered). Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a *hasan gharīb* hadith. We know it only through the narration of Mūsā ibn Ibrāhīm. ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī and several others narrated this hadith from Mūsā ibn Ibrāhīm.” The hadith also appears in *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 2/1249 (Book of Etiquette, chapter: The Virtue of Those Who Praise Allah). Al-Suyūtī cited it in *Sahīh al-Jāmiʿ al-Saghīr*, 1/362, and al-Albānī graded it *hasan*.
