Thus, his words in the authentic hadith:
“He will have given them nothing dearer to them than gazing upon Him”
show that the delight attained by gazing upon Him is greater than every other delight in Paradise. In this world, a person finds within his heart, through remembering Allah, recalling His praises and favors, and worshiping Him, a delight that he finds in nothing else.
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“The delight of my eyes has been placed in prayer.” (1)
He would also say:
“Give us comfort through prayer, O Bilāl.” (2)
And in the hadith: “When you pass by
(1) This is part of a hadith narrated by Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him): “Women and perfume from your world were made beloved to me, and the delight of my eyes was placed in prayer.” It appears in *Sunan al-Nasā’ī*, 7/58–60 (“Book of the Kind Treatment of Women,” chapter “Love of Women”), where it begins: “From this world, there were made beloved to me…” It also appears in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 3/128, 119, and 285. Al-Suyūtī adds in *al-Jāmi al-Saghīr* that the hadith is found in al-Hākim’s *al-Mustadrak* and al-Bayhaqī’s *al-Sunan*. Al-Albānī graded the hadith authentic in *Sahīh al-Jāmi*, 3/87, and stated in his notes on al-Tibrīzī’s *Mishkāt al-Masābīh*, 2/669 (al-Maktab al-Islāmī, Damascus, 1381/1961): “Another addition, namely ‘three,’ has become widespread on people’s tongues, but it has no basis in any of the hadith’s transmission routes. Indeed, it distorts the meaning, as is readily apparent.” See also my discussion of the hadith and this addition in *Jāmi al-Rasā’il*, 2/118–19.
(2) Manuscripts *hā*, *rā*, and *wāw* read: “Give us rest through it, O Bilāl.” The hadith is narrated from an unnamed Companion in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 4/406 (“Book of Manners,” chapter on the night prayer). Its wording is: Sālim ibn Abī al-Ja’d said: A man said—Mis’ar said, “I believe he was from Khuzā’a”—“I wish I had prayed and found rest.” They appeared to criticize him for saying this, so he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “O Bilāl, commence the prayer and give us rest through it.” The hadith appears with this wording in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 5/364.
The following hadith then appears in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*: Sālim ibn Abī al-Ja’d narrated from Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, who said: My father and I went to visit a relative by marriage from the Ansār who was ill. When the time for prayer arrived, he said to one of his household: “Young woman, bring me water for ablution, so that I may pray and find rest.” We took exception to this, so he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Rise, O Bilāl, and give us rest through prayer.” The hadith appears with this wording in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 5/371. Al-Albānī graded it authentic in *Mishkāt al-Masābīh*, 1/393, and *Sahīh al-Jāmi al-Saghīr*, 6/284.
