Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

of the plural form, for what a person in authority accomplishes through his forces may be expressed by saying, “We are doing such-and-such.” The angels are Allah’s messengers in relation to what He creates and commands. Thus, concerning whatever He creates and commands through His angelic messengers, He says, “We did it,” just as He Most High said:

“When We have recited it, follow its recitation.”

[Surah al-Qiyāma: 18]

In the two Sahih collections, Ibn Abbas is reported to have said, “It is for Us to gather it in your heart, and then to (1) recite it through your tongue. When Gabriel recites it, listen to him until he has finished (2).”

As He said (3) in the other verse:

“Do not hasten with the Quran before its revelation to you has been completed.”

[Surah Tā Hā: 114]

That is: Do not hasten to recite what Gabriel is reciting to you before Gabriel has completed his recitation. Rather, listen to him until he completes (4) his recitation, and then

(1) The word “that” is omitted in H, R, and B. (2) The hadith, with some variation in wording, is narrated from Ibn Abbas—may Allah be pleased with him and his father—in three places in *Sahih al-Bukhārī*: 1/4 (*The Beginning of Revelation*, “How Revelation Began”); 6/163 (*Tafsīr*, Surah al-Qiyāma); and 9/152–153 (*Tawhīd*, “The Statement of Allah Most High: ‘Do not move your tongue with it…’”). It is also found in *Sahih Muslim*, 1/330–331 (*Prayer*, “Listening to the Recitation”); *al-Musnad* (al-Ma‘ārif ed.), 3/278 and, in abridged form, 5/69. Ibn Kathīr also cited it in his *Tafsīr* (al-Sha‘b ed.), 5/312 and 8/303–304. One version of the hadith reads (*Sahih al-Bukhārī*, 6/163): “When Gabriel descended with revelation to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—the Prophet would move his tongue and lips with it, which caused him difficulty, and this was apparent in him. Allah therefore revealed the verses in ‘I Swear by the Day of Resurrection’: ‘Do not move your tongue with it in haste. It is for Us to gather it and recite it’ [Surah al-Qiyāma: 16–17]. He explained: ‘It is for Us to gather it in your breast. “And recite it. Then, when We have recited it, follow its recitation”: when We reveal it, listen attentively. “Then it is for Us to explain it”: it is for Us to make you articulate it.’ He said: ‘Thereafter, whenever Gabriel came to him, he would listen silently; and once Gabriel had departed, he would recite it as Allah had promised him.’” (3) H and B read: “as was said.” (4) H and B read: “is completed.”
