all besides Him; through entrusting one’s affairs to Him rather than to all besides Him; through turning in repentance to Him rather than to all besides Him; through seeking His judgment rather than that of anyone besides Him; and through bringing one’s disputes before Him rather than before anyone besides Him.
In the two Sahih collections, it is reported from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—that “he would say:
(* When he rose to pray at night; and it has been related that he would say it (1) after the opening takbīr *) (2):
‘O Allah, all praise belongs to You. You are the Sustainer of the heavens (3) and the earth and all who are in them. All praise belongs to You. You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and all who are in them. All praise belongs to You. (4) You are the Truth, Your word is true, and Your promise is true (5). Meeting You is true, Paradise is true, Hellfire is true, the prophets are true, and Muhammad is true. O Allah, to You I have submitted, in You I have believed, upon You I have relied, to You I have turned in repentance, by Your aid I have contended, and to You I have appealed for judgment. So forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.’” (6)
The Exalted said:
“Say, ‘Should I take anyone other than Allah as a protector—the Originator of the heavens and the earth—when He feeds and is not fed?’”
[Surah al-Anām: 14].
