Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

[Surah al-Zumar: 7]

He has stated that He is not pleased with it even when it does occur. It cannot be said that He is pleased with everything that exists.

As for your assertion that He is not pleased with it “as a religion,” pleasure in the Book of Allah relates to the act itself, [not to some](1) omitted qualification. According to you, His not being pleased with it as a religion means that He does not wish to reward the one who commits it. Yet it is well known that, in this sense, Iblīs and the devils are not pleased with it as a religion either, even though Iblīs is pleased with disbelief and chooses it. Indeed, he may love what Allah hates and hate what [Allah](2) loves, in order thereby to lead people astray.

Allah Most High said concerning him:

“Will you then take him and his offspring as allies instead of Me, though they are enemies to you? What an evil exchange for the wrongdoers!”

[Surah al-Kahf: 50]

He Most High also said:

“Did I not command you, O children of Adam, not to worship Satan, for he is indeed a manifest enemy to you, and to worship Me? This is a straight path.”

[Surah Yā Sīn: 60–61]

They said: The Muslim community unanimously agrees that Allah—Glorified is He—loves faith and righteous deeds; that He loves the God-fearing and those who do good; that He loves those who constantly repent and those who purify themselves; that He loves those who act justly; and that He neither loves sins nor is pleased with them.

Our appeal to this consensus is stronger than your appeal to their saying(3): “Whatever Allah wills comes to pass, and whatever He does not will does not come to pass.” For they all say that Allah and His Messenger are pleased with prayer, charity, and righteous deeds, and that Allah and His Messenger love them. Regarding indecencies and injustice, they say: “Allah and His Messenger are not pleased with this, nor do Allah and His Messenger love it.”

(1) “Not to anything” is omitted from (N). (2) The name “Allah” does not occur in (N). (3) (H) and (B) read: “to the saying”; (W) reads: “to his saying.”
