Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

and by this she did not mean shirk (1). Rather, she meant a God-fearing man who is himself feared and therefore does not venture (2) into indecency.

Allah Most High said:

“Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect.”

[Surah al-Talāq: 1–2]

Allah Most High also said:

“If you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and absolve you of your evil deeds.”

[Surah al-Anfāl: 29]

Allah Most High also said:

“Indeed, whoever fears Allah and remains patient—Allah never allows the reward of those who do good to be lost.”

[Surah Yūsuf: 90]

Allah Most High also said:

“You will surely be tested in your wealth and yourselves, and you will surely hear much abuse from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah. But if you remain patient and fear Allah, that is surely a matter requiring resolve.”

[Surah Āl Imrān: 186]

Allah Most High also said:

“Then We placed you upon a divinely ordained way concerning the matter; so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know,” up to His words, “And Allah is the Protector of the God-fearing.”

[Surah al-Jāthiya: 18–19]

And He said:

“O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words of truth. He will set your deeds right for you and forgive you your sins.”

[Surah al-Ahzāb: 70–71]

They had already believed and guarded themselves against shirk. Thus, what He commanded them after that was not merely to forsake shirk.

Allah Most High also said:

“O you who believe, fear Allah as He deserves to be feared.”

[Surah Āl Imrān: 102]

(1) At the phrase “and by this she did not mean shirk,” manuscript Y resumes after the lengthy lacuna whose beginning I indicated earlier. (2) H, B, Y, and R read: “She meant the God-fearing man who does not venture”; A and W read: “She meant the one who is feared and therefore does not proceed.”
