Through the same chain, Muhammad ibn Ubayd (1) said: Al-Hasan—namely, Ibn al-Hakam al-Nakhaī—related to us, from Rabāh (2) ibn al-Hārith (3), who said:
“We were in a valley, and my knee was almost touching (4) the knee of Ammār ibn Yāsir, when a man approached and said, ‘By Allah, the people of Syria have fallen into disbelief (5).’
“Ammār replied, ‘Do not say that. Our direction of prayer is one, and our Prophet is one. However, they are a people caught up in tribulation, so it became incumbent upon us to fight them until they return to the truth.’”
Through the same chain, Ibn Yahyā said: Qabīsah related to us: Sufyān related to us, from al-Hasan ibn al-Hakam, from Rabāh (6) ibn al-Hārith, from Ammār ibn Yāsir, who said:
“Our religion is one, our direction of prayer is one, and our call is one. However, they are a people who committed aggression against us, so we fought them.”
Ibn Yahyā said:
Yalā related to us: Misar related to us, from Abd Allah ibn Rabāh, from Rabāh ibn al-Hārith, who said:
Ammār ibn Yāsir said, “Do not say, ‘The people of Syria have fallen into disbelief.’ Say, ‘They have acted sinfully.’ Say, ‘They have acted unjustly.’”
Muhammad ibn Nasr said:
“This demonstrates that the report narrated from Ammār ibn Yāsir, according to which he declared Uthmān ibn Affān an unbeliever, is false and inauthentic. For if he rejected the charge of unbelief against Muāwiyah’s supporters—who professed that they were fighting to avenge Uthmān’s blood—he would have rejected declaring Uthmān himself an unbeliever even more emphatically.”
I say:
What is reported in the account of Ammār is that when he said this, Alī objected to him
