When the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and his Companions slept through the prayer in the valley, he said:

“This is a valley where Satan came upon us.” (1)

He also said:

“Satan came to Bilāl and began lulling him (2), as a child is lulled, until he fell asleep.” (3)

For he had entrusted Bilāl with keeping watch for dawn on their behalf (4). This was despite his statement:

“There is no negligence in sleep.” (5)

And he said, “Indeed, Allah took

(1) W reads: “a devil.” The hadith is narrated from Abu Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in Muslim, 1:471–72, Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer, chapter “Making Up a Missed Prayer and the Recommendation to Make It Up Promptly.” Its wording is: “We stopped to rest late at night with Allah’s Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and did not awaken until the sun had risen. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said, ‘Let each man take his mount by the head, for this is a stopping place where Satan came upon us.’ He said: So we did so. He then called for water and performed ablution, after which he prayed two rak'ahs.” The term *ta'rīs* means travelers’ stopping toward the end of the night to sleep and rest. The hadith also appears in *Sunan al-Nasā'ī*, 1:240, Book of Prayer Times, chapter “How to Make Up a Missed Prayer,” and in *al-Musnad*, al-Ma'ārif ed., 18:152. For the wording “This is a valley where Satan came upon us,” see the following note. (2) H reads: *yahudduhu*. (3) The report is narrated from Zayd ibn Aslam—may Allah be pleased with him—in *al-Muwatta*, 1:14–15, Book of Prayer Times, chapter “Those Who Sleep Through Prayer.” Its text reads: “One night, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—stopped to rest on the road to Mecca and appointed Bilāl to wake them for prayer. Bilāl fell asleep, and so did they, until they awoke after the sun had risen upon them. The people awoke in alarm. The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—ordered them to mount and ride until they had left that valley, saying, ‘This is a valley in which there is a devil.’ They mounted and rode until they had left the valley…” The hadith also states: “Then the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—turned to Abu Bakr and said, ‘Satan came to Bilāl while he was standing in prayer and made him lie down. He then continued soothing him, as a child is soothed, until he fell asleep,’” and so forth. The annotation states: “By agreement of the transmitters of *al-Muwatta*, this report is *mursal*—its Companion link is omitted.” (4) “To keep watch for dawn on their behalf” means to watch for it, safeguard it, and remain on guard for it. Its verbal noun is *kilā'‌*. (5) This wording occurs in a hadith narrated by Abu Qatāda—may Allah be pleased with him—in Muslim, 1:472, Book of Mosques, chapter “Making Up a Missed Prayer.” Its wording is: “Take note: there is no negligence in sleep.” The hadith begins: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—addressed us and said, ‘You will travel this evening and throughout the night…’” [and the rest of the hadith].
