They also spread lies about al-Hajjāj and others, alleging that al-Hajjāj killed the nobility. Yet al-Hajjāj never killed a single Hashimite, despite his injustice and brutality, for Abd al-Malik had forbidden him to do so. He killed only some members of the Arab nobility who were not from Banū Hāshim. He once married a Hashimite woman, the daughter of Abd Allāh ibn Ja‘far, but Banū Umayyah would not permit it. They separated the two and said:
“Al-Hajjāj is not a suitable match for a noble Hashimite woman.”
Likewise, those of the Rāfidah who were (1) in Syria and possessed influence or weapons would aid the unbelievers—whether polytheists or Christians (2), the People of the Book—against the Muslims, helping them kill and capture Muslims and seize their property.
The Khawārij did none of this. Rather, they themselves (3) fought people, but they did not empower unbelievers—whether polytheists or People of the Book—against the Muslims.
