is a sanctuary (1) from Ayr to Thawr. Whoever commits an offense there or shelters an offender shall incur the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. Allah will accept neither an obligatory nor a voluntary deed from him.” (2)

And he said:

“May Allah curse whoever commits the deed of the people of Lot.” (3)

And he said:

“May Allah curse men who imitate women and women who imitate men.” (4)

And he said:

(1) ح، م، and ب read: “sacred.” (2) The hadith, with some variation in wording, is narrated from Alī ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—in *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*, 3/20, Book of the Virtues of Medina, chapter “The Sanctuary of Medina.” It also appears elsewhere in *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*; see Dr. al-Bughā’s edition, hadith nos. 3001, 3008, 6374, and 6870. It is also found in *Sahīh Muslim*, 2/994–999, Book of Pilgrimage, chapter “The Virtue of Medina,” as well as elsewhere in *Sahīh Muslim*, *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, *Sunan al-Nasā’ī*, and *Musnad Ahmad*. (3) This appears in the hadith of Ibn Abbās cited shortly above. Its wording in *al-Musnad*, al-Ma'ārif edition, 3/266, is: “Cursed is whoever insults his father; cursed is whoever insults his mother; cursed is whoever sacrifices to other than Allah; cursed is whoever alters the boundary markers of the land; cursed is whoever misleads a blind person from the road; cursed is whoever has intercourse with an animal; and cursed is whoever commits the deed of the people of Lot.” Ahmad Shākir—may Allah have mercy on him—graded this hadith authentic, as well as the other narrations, nos. 2817, 2915, 2916, and 2917. Al-Tirmidhī also records in his *Sunan*, 3/9, Book of Prescribed Punishments, chapter “What Has Been Reported Concerning the Punishment for the Sodomite,” a hadith narrated from Amr ibn Abī Amr whose wording is: “Cursed is whoever commits the deed of the people of Lot.” (4) The hadith is narrated from Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—in *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*, 7/159, Book of Clothing, chapter “Expelling Men Who Imitate Women.” Its wording is: “The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—cursed effeminate men and women who imitate men, and he said: ‘Expel them from your homes.’” Ibn Abbās added: “The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—expelled one man, and Umar expelled another.” An abridged version appears in *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 4/194, Book of Seeking Permission, chapter “What Has Been Reported Concerning Women Who Imitate Men.” It also appears in *Sunan al-Dārimī*, 2/280–281, Book of Seeking Permission, chapter “Cursing Effeminate Men and Women Who Imitate Men”; and in *al-Musnad*, al-Ma'ārif edition, 3/305–314, as well as elsewhere. (5) م and و read: “to someone other than”; ن reads: “from someone other than.”
