[Surah Āl ʿImrān: 105–107].
Ibn ʿAbbās said:
“The faces of the people of the Sunnah will become bright, while the faces of the people of religious innovation will become dark” (1).
For this reason, Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī and others interpreted these verses as applying to the Khārijites.
Allah Most High commanded all the believers to hold fast, all together, to His rope and not be divided. His rope has been interpreted as His Book, His religion, Islam, sincerity, His command, His covenant, obedience to Him, and the united community. All these interpretations have been transmitted from the Companions and those who follow them faithfully until the Day of Judgment, and all of them are correct (2). For the Quran enjoins the religion of Islam, which is His covenant, His command, and obedience to Him. Holding fast to it all together can only be achieved within the united community, and the essence of Islam is sincere devotion to Allah.
It is narrated in Sahīh Muslim from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“Allah is pleased with three things for you: that you worship Him and associate nothing with Him; that you hold fast, all together, to the rope of Allah and do not become divided; and that you sincerely advise those whom Allah has placed in authority over you” (3).
