, enough for me. As for Paradise, there will remain surplus room in it, so Allah will bring into being a creation for it and settle them in the remaining expanses of Paradise.”(1)
This is how it has been narrated in the Sahih collections through more than one chain. However, an error occurs in one of al-Bukhārī’s transmission routes, in which it reads:
“As for the Fire, there will remain surplus room in it.”(2)
Al-Bukhārī narrated it correctly in all the other places in order to make this narrator’s error clear. This was his customary practice whenever a narrator erred in a wording: he would cite the wordings of the other narrators, through which the correct version could be known. I know of no error occurring in it except that
(1) This is part of the hadith of Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—which reads: “As for Paradise, Allah Almighty will create creatures for it.” It is recorded in al-Bukhārī, 6/138–139, at the preceding reference, and Muslim, 4/2186–2187, at the preceding reference. Muslim, 6/2188, also narrates from Anas—may Allah be pleased with him: “As much space as Allah wills shall remain in Paradise; then Allah Most High will create for it such creatures as He wills.” Another narration from Anas—may Allah be pleased with him—states: “Paradise will continue to have space left over until Allah creates creatures for it and settles them in its remaining space.” It is recorded in al-Bukhārī, 9/117, at the preceding reference, and Muslim, 4/2188, at the preceding reference.
(2) Despite an extensive search, I did not find this wording in al-Bukhārī. I did, however, find a hadith containing it in al-Bukhārī, 9/134, Book of Divine Oneness, chapter “Concerning Allah Most High’s words, ‘Indeed, Allah’s mercy is near to those who do good.’” It is narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—and states: “He said to the Fire: ‘You are My punishment; through you I afflict whom I will, and each of you shall have its fill.’ He continued: ‘As for Paradise, Allah wrongs none of His creation. He will create for the Fire whomever He wills, and they will be cast into it. It will ask, “Is there any more?” three times, until He places His Foot in it. It will then become full, its parts will close in upon one another, and it will say, “Enough, enough, enough.”’”
In his commentary on this hadith, *Fath al-Bārī*, 13/436–437, Ibn Hajar states: “Abū al-Hasan al-Qābisī said: ‘The established wording in this passage is that Allah will create creatures for Paradise; as for the Fire, He will place His Foot in it. I know of no hadith stating that He will create creatures for the Fire except this one.’” End quote. A number of leading scholars held that this wording had been transposed, and Ibn al-Qayyim stated categorically that it was an error. He argued that Allah Most High has declared that Hell will be filled with Iblīs and his followers. Our shaykh al-Bulqīnī likewise rejected this narration, citing Allah’s words, “Your Lord wrongs no one.” He then said: “Interpreting it as referring to stones cast into the Fire is more plausible than interpreting it as referring to a living being punished without having committed any sin.” End quote.
Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Bāz states in his commentary on the hadith, 11/434: “Ibn al-Qayyim stated categorically that this was an error by the narrator. The correct wording is, ‘He will create creatures for Paradise,’ as established above in hadith no. 4850, the hadith of Abū Hurayra in the exegesis of Surah Qāf concerning Allah Most High’s words, ‘And it will say, Is there any more?’ It is likewise established in hadith no. 7384, the hadith of Anas in the Book of Divine Oneness, chapter ‘Allah Most High’s words, “And He is the Almighty, the All-Wise,”’ transmitted by Qatāda from Anas. These two narrations demonstrate that the narrator misspoke here, saying ‘the Fire’ in place of ‘Paradise.’ In hadith terminology, this is called an inversion (*al-munqalib*).” I found the cited statement of Ibn al-Qayyim in his book *Hādī al-Arwāh ilā Bilād al-Afrāh*, p. 385, al-Madanī ed., 1398.
