the believers (1); rather, they say only, “Al-sāmu alaykum” (“Death be upon you”), for al-sām means death; and so do the Rāfidah. *) (2) The Jews do not eat the jarrī fish, the marmāhā fish, [or al-dhināb] (3), and neither do the Rāfidah. The Jews do not regard (4) wiping over leather socks as valid, and neither do the Rāfidah.

The Jews deem the property of all people lawful for themselves, and so do the Rāfidah. Allah has informed us (5) of this concerning them (6) in the Quran [as follows] (7): {They say, “We are under no obligation toward the Gentiles.”} [Surah Āl Imrān: 75], [and likewise the Rāfidah] (8). The Jews prostrate upon

(1) N and M read: “the Muslims.” (2) In N and M, the material between the two asterisks is placed after the passages that follow. (3) The *jirrī* is a kind of fish that was claimed to have once been a community that was subsequently transformed (*al-Hayawān*, 1/397). In *Talbīs Iblīs*, p. 100, Ibn al-Jawzī cites al-Murtadā’s work on positions peculiar to the Imāmiyyah, stating that they prohibit the *jirrī* fish. The *marmāhā* is a fish resembling snakes, though it is not a snake (*al-Hayawān*, 4/129). “And *al-dhināb*”: thus in B alone. A and L read *al-zināb*, while the word is omitted from N and M. The correct reading may be “the rabbit.” A little later (p. 20), al-Shabī is quoted as saying: “The Jews prohibited the rabbit and the spleen, and so did the Rāfidah.” Al-Āmilī states in *Ayān al-Shīah*, 1/502, that the Shia prohibit eating foxes, rabbits, spiny-tailed lizards, *jirrī* fish, and all scaleless fish. Zayn al-Dīn al-Jubai al-Āmilī likewise mentions this in *al-Rawdah al-Bahiyyah: Sharh al-Lumah al-Dimashqiyyah*, 2/277–278 (Beirut, 1379/1960). In *Minhāj al-Sharīah fī al-Radd alā Ibn Taymiyyah*, 1/35, 37, Muhammad al-Mahdī al-Kāzimī al-Qazwīnī read *al-dhināb* as *al-dhiāb* (“wolves”). This reading is incorrect because, as is well known, Ahl al-Sunnah also prohibit eating wolves. The Shia also prohibit eating flies (*al-Rawdah al-Bahiyyah*, 2/281). The word may therefore be *al-dhubāb* (“flies”), *al-dibāb* (“spiny-tailed lizards”), the plural of *dabb*, or *al-zimār*. (4) N and M read: “they do not regard,” using a feminine singular verb. (5) M reads: “informed,” without “us.” (6) N and M read: “of this.” (7) The words “that they” are added in L. (8) The words “and likewise the Rāfidah” are omitted from A, L, and B.
