groups of people who had not seen him. They had never even heard Alī mentioned and did not know who he was, yet they were God-fearing believers deserving of Paradise. The Rāfidī Shia (1), the Nusayrīs, and the Ismāʿīlīs are all united in claiming to love him, although most of them are among the inhabitants of the Fire—indeed, they will abide therein forever.
CHAPTER
Likewise, the hadith he cited concerning the covenant Allah made (2) regarding Alī—stating that he is the standard of guidance, the leader of Allah’s allies, and the word He enjoined upon the God-fearing (3), and so forth (4)—
(1) A, B, T, M, and W: “the Shia and the Rāfida.”
(2) A, M, H, and B: “Allah made a covenant.”
(3) A, B, and M: “the God-fearing.”
(4) Ibn al-Mutahhar’s exact words in (K), p. 131, are as follows: “Among these is the report narrated by Abū Abd Allāh, the Shāfiī hadith master, through his chain of transmission from Abū Burda, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘Allah made a covenant with me concerning Alī (peace be upon him). I said, “My Lord, make it clear to me.” He said, “Listen.” I replied, “I am listening.” He then said, “Alī is the standard of guidance, the leader of Allah’s allies, and the light of whoever obeys Me. He is the word that I have made binding upon the God-fearing. Whoever loves him loves Me, and whoever hates him hates Me. Give him these glad tidings.”’ Alī (peace be upon him) then came, and I gave him the glad tidings. He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I am Allah’s servant and am in His grasp. If He punishes me, it is for my sins; and if He fulfills for me that of which you have given me glad tidings, Allah has the greater claim upon me.’ He said: ‘I then prayed, “O Allah, illumine his heart and make faith its springtime.” Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “I have done that for him.” It was then conveyed to me that He would single him out for an affliction unlike any imposed upon my Companions. I said: “My Lord! He is my brother and companion!” He replied: “This is something already decreed. He will be tried, and others will be tried through him.”’ The author of *Hilyat al-Awliyā* also narrated from Ammār ibn Yāsir that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘Whoever believes in me and accepts me as truthful concerning the *walāya* (allegiance) of Alī ibn Abī Tālib (peace be upon him) has truly believed (the original reads *ūmina*, “was believed”). Whoever takes him as an ally has taken me as an ally, and whoever takes me as an ally has taken Allah, Mighty and Majestic, as an ally.’ Ibn Abbās also related that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘O Alī, whoever insults you has insulted me; whoever insults me has insulted Allah; and whoever insults Allah will be cast face-first into the Fire.’ The reports transmitted by our opponents are too numerous to count; in this abridgment, however, we have limited ourselves to these.”
