Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Furthermore, it is well known that those who loved him, had seen him, and fought alongside him loved him more deeply than others did. Yet he himself continually condemned and faulted them (1), castigated them, and disavowed their conduct toward him (2). He prayed against them, asking Allah to replace them for him with people better than they and to replace him for them with someone worse than he. Even if their only sins had been their failure to support him in battle and their disobedience to his commands, then, if those people were the best of the Shia and ‘Alī made clear that those sins harmed them, what then of sins graver than theirs when committed by people worse than they?

In sum, this (3) doctrine is manifest disbelief (4). Whoever espouses it must be called to repentance, and no one who believes in Allah and the Last Day may make such a claim.

The same applies to his statement:

“Hating him is an evil deed with which no good deed is of any avail.”

If someone who hates him is an unbeliever, it is his unbelief that condemns him to misery. If he is a believer, his faith benefits him even if he hates him (5).

Likewise, the hadith he cited (6) from Ibn Mas‘ūd—

[that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:] (7)

“Loving the family of Muhammad for one day is better than a year of worship, and whoever dies with that love will enter Paradise”—

and the statement he attributed to ‘Alī:

“I and this man are Allah’s proof against His creation”—

are two hadiths

(1) “And faulted them” is absent from N and M. (2) “Toward him” is absent from A, B, and M. (3) A and B read: “And in sum, this…” (4) “Manifest” is absent from N, M, and W. (5) The lengthy lacuna in H, R, and Y ends here. (6) H and R read: “Among them is the one he cited”; Y reads: “Among them is what he cited.” (7) The text between square brackets is absent from N, M, W, A, and Y.
