Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

his casting them, after which I continued to see their strength diminished and their cause in retreat, until Allah defeated them.” Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim recorded it in their Sahīhs (1).

In one wording reported by al-Bukhārī, he said:

“And Abū Sufyān was holding the bridle of his mule (2).”

It also states:

“Al-Abbās said, ‘Abū Sufyān and I remained beside the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—on the day of Hunayn and never left him.’” (3)

As for washing him—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and placing him in his grave, the members of his household took part,

(1) The hadith narrated by al-Abbās ibn Abd al-Muttalib—may Allah be pleased with him—appears in *Sahīh Muslim*, 3/1398–1400, “The Book of Jihad and Military Expeditions,” chapter “The Battle of Hunayn,” and in *al-Musnad*, al-Maārif edition, 3/208–210. Shaykh Ahmad Shākir—may Allah have mercy on him—states in his commentary: “Muslim narrated this hadith, 2/10–61, through Yūnus from al-Zuhrī, and through Abd al-Razzāq from Mamar from al-Zuhrī. It was likewise narrated by al-Hākim in *al-Mustadrak*, 3:327, although he claimed that al-Bukhārī and Muslim had not recorded it. Al-Dhahabī corrected him by noting that Muslim had recorded it.” Thus, we find no evidence that al-Bukhārī narrated the hadith of al-Abbās. Perhaps Ibn Taymiyya meant that a hadith conveying the same meaning, narrated by al-Barā ibn Āzib, appears in al-Bukhārī. As for the words, “I continued to see their strength diminished,” they mean: “I continued to see their power weakened.” (2) The hadith narrated by al-Barā ibn Āzib—may Allah be pleased with him—appears in *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*, 4/30–31, “The Book of Jihad and Military Expeditions,” chapter “One Who Leads Another Person’s Mount.” Its wording is: A man asked al-Barā ibn Āzib—may Allah be pleased with them both—“Did you flee from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—on the day of Hunayn?” He replied, “But the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—did not flee. The Hawāzin were skilled archers. When we encountered them, we charged them and they fled. The Muslims then turned to the spoils, whereupon they met us with arrows. As for the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—he did not flee. I saw him upon his white mule while Abū Sufyān was holding its bridle, and the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was saying, ‘I am the Prophet—this is no lie; I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib.’” The hadith also appears in *Sahīh Muslim*, 3/1400–1401, at the preceding reference. The hadith of al-Barā—may Allah be pleased with him—also appears elsewhere in *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*: 4/32, “The Book of Jihad and Military Expeditions,” chapter “The Prophet’s White Mule”; 4/43, chapter “One Who Arrayed His Companions at the Time of Defeat”; 4/67, chapter “One Who Said, ‘Take it! I am the son of so-and-so’”; and 5/153, “The Book of Military Expeditions,” chapter “The Saying of Allah Most High: ‘And on the day of Hunayn, when your great numbers impressed you.’” See also *Fath al-Bārī*, 8/28–32. (3) This phrase occurs in the hadith of al-Abbās—may Allah be pleased with him—in *Sahīh Muslim*, 3/1398, and *al-Musnad*, al-Maārif edition, 3/208.
