the killing of Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him:
“When his burial had been completed, the members of the council assembled. Abd al-Rahmān (1) said, ‘Entrust your affair to three from among you.’ Al-Zubayr (2) said, ‘I relinquish my claim in favor of Alī.’ Talha (3) said, ‘I relinquish my claim [in favor of Uthmān.’ Saʿd said, ‘I relinquish my claim] (4) in favor of Abd al-Rahmān (5).’
Abd al-Rahmān then said, ‘Which of you will withdraw (6) from this matter so that we may entrust it to him—with Allah and Islam as witnesses over him—to determine whom he considers the best (7)?’ The two senior men remained silent.
Abd al-Rahmān said, ‘Will you entrust it to me? Allah is my witness that I will not fail (8) to choose the best among you.’
They replied, ‘Yes.’ He then took one of them by the hand and said, ‘You possess kinship with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and precedence in Islam, as I well know. I charge you by Allah: if I appoint you, you must act justly; and if I appoint another over you, you must hear and obey.’ He then conferred privately with the other and said the same to him.
After securing their pledge, he said, ‘Raise your hand, Uthmān (9).’”
