“Are you not content to hold the same position in relation to me as Aaron held in relation to Moses? Except that you are not a prophet. It is not (1) fitting for me to leave unless you are my deputy.” (2)
The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—also said (3) to him:
“You are my ally as regards every believer after me.”
He said: “He closed (4) all the doors of the mosque except Alī’s door.” (5) He said that Alī would enter the mosque (6) while in a state of major ritual impurity, for it was his passageway and he had no other.
He also said to him:
“Whoever has me as his ally has Alī as his ally.” (7)
It is also related in a report traced back to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—“that he sent Abū Bakr to Mecca (8) with (Sūrat Barā’a). He traveled with it (9) for three days, whereupon he told Alī, ‘Catch up with him, send him back, and deliver it yourself.’ He did so. (10) When (11) Abū Bakr returned to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—he wept and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, has something happened (12) concerning me?’ He replied, ‘No, but I was commanded (13) that no one should deliver it (14) except me or one of my own.’”
