reward can be attained only thereby. It follows that their being freed from defilement and purified of sins was among their attributes. Thus, what the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—prayed for on behalf of the People of the Cloak was only part of what had been attributed to the first and foremost. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—also prayed that Allah would bless people other than the People of the Cloak, and he prayed for many people(1) to be granted Paradise, forgiveness, and other things even greater than this. Yet it did not follow that those for whom he prayed in this manner were superior to the first and foremost.
However, since the People of the Cloak were required to avoid defilement and attain purity, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—prayed that Allah would help them fulfill what He had commanded them, so that they would not deserve blame and punishment but would instead attain praise and reward.
