Al-Bukhārī also narrated from Ibn Abbās that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“It is as though I can see him: a black, bow-legged man, tearing it down stone by stone.” (1)
Allah Most High says:
“Allah has made the Kaaba, the Sacred House, a means of support for people, as well as the sacred month, the sacrificial animals, and the garlanded offerings.” [Surah al-Mā’idah: 97]
Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—said, “If the people were to abandon Hajj for a single year, they would be granted no respite.” He also said, “If all the people agreed not to perform Hajj, the sky would fall upon the earth.” Imam Ahmad cited this in al-Manāsik (2).
For this reason, more than one of the jurists among the followers of al-Shāfiʿī and Ahmad stated that Hajj is a communal obligation every year.
A catapult is used only against a target that cannot be overcome (3) without it. Thus, “the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—bombarded the people of al-Tā’if with a catapult” when they entered their fortress and barricaded themselves inside. Likewise, when Ibn al-Zubayr and his companions took refuge in the Sacred Mosque, those besieging them bombarded them with catapults because they could not overcome them otherwise. After Ibn al-Zubayr was killed, they entered the Sacred Mosque, circumambulated the Kaaba, and al-Hajjāj ibn Yūsuf led the people in Hajj that year. Abd al-Malik ibn Marwān had instructed him not to oppose Ibn Umar in matters pertaining to Hajj.
Had they intended evil against the Kaaba, they would have carried it out once they had gained control of it, just as they killed Ibn al-Zubayr once they had gained control of him.
