Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

As for his statement:

“Khālid never ceased to be an enemy of Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—rejecting him as a liar.”

That was before he embraced Islam, just as all the Companions had rejected the Messenger before embracing Islam, whether they belonged to Banū Hāshim or not (1), such as Abū Sufyān ibn al-Hārith ibn Abd al-Muttalib; his brother Rabīah; Hamzah, the Prophet’s uncle; Aqīl; and others.

He also says:

“The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sent him to Banū Jadhīmah to collect their alms, but he betrayed him, disobeyed his command (2), and killed the Muslims. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then stood and delivered an address condemning him, raising his hands toward heaven until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen, and saying, ‘O Allah, before You I declare myself innocent of what Khālid has done.’ He then sent the Commander of the Faithful to him to remedy his transgression (3), and instructed him to placate the people over what he had done.”

In response, it may be said: This account contains such ignorance and distortion as cannot escape anyone familiar with the Prophet’s biography. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sent Khālid to them after the conquest of Mecca so that they would embrace Islam. They did not know how to say, “We have embraced Islam,” and instead said, “We have changed our religion! We have changed our religion!” This was not accepted from them, and Khālid said, “This is not Islam,” and killed them. The leading Companions who were with him condemned him for this, including Sālim, the freedman of Abū Hudhayfah, Abd Allah ibn Umar, and others. When news of this reached the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—he raised his hands (4) toward heaven and said:

(1) N and M read: “and others.” (2) N and M read: “and disobeyed his command.” (3) A and B read: “his transgression.” (4) A and B read: “his hand.”
