the prescribed alms, but he acted treacherously toward him, disobeyed his command, and killed Muslims. ‘The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then stood to address his Companions (1), denouncing him, and raised his hands (2) toward heaven until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen, saying: “O Allah, I declare myself innocent before You of what Khālid has done.”’ He then dispatched the Commander of the Faithful to him to make amends for his misdeed (3), and ordered him (4) to secure the people’s satisfaction regarding what Khālid had done.”

K: “the people, and he did so.”

It may be said in response: As for calling Khālid the Sword of Allah, this designation was not exclusive to him. Rather, he was “one of Allah’s swords, which Allah unsheathed against the polytheists.” This is how it is reported in the hadith from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—(5). The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was the first to call him by this

(1) N reads: “addressing his Companions.” (2) A and B read: “his hand.” (3) A and B read: “his misdeed.” (4) A, B, and S read: “that.” (5) Al-Albānī graded the hadith authentic in *Sahīh al-Jāmi al-Saghīr*, 3/105. Al-Suyūtī stated that Ibn Asākir transmitted it from Umar. The hadith appears in *al-Musnad* (al-Maārif ed.), 1/173, no. 43, on the authority of Abū Bakr al-Siddīq—may Allah be pleased with him. Its wording is: “…Abū Bakr appointed Khālid ibn al-Walīd to lead the fight against the apostates and said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say: “What an excellent servant of Allah and kinsman Khālid ibn al-Walīd is! He is one of Allah’s swords, which Allah—Mighty and Majestic—has unsheathed against the disbelievers and hypocrites.”’” Shaykh Ahmad Shākir—may Allah have mercy on him—graded the hadith authentic, stating: “Its chain of transmission is authentic. See *Majma al-Zawāid*, 9/348.” In *Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīha*, 3/241, hadith no. 1237, al-Albānī stated that the hadith with this wording was related by al-Hākim in *al-Mustadrak*, 3/298. Al-Hākim said, “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabī made no comment on it. It was also related by Ibn Asākir (5/271, 2/17 \ 372). See al-Albānī’s discussion, 3/239–242.
